Monthly Prompt Challenge

Welcome to our monthly Prompt Challenge! Every month we'll share three prompts that fit a central theme. All of our authors are invited (but not obligated) to participate.

July's Challenge: The Price of Freedom

Choose one of the following three prompts and write a short story (or even just a single scene) based on that prompt:

  1. The tyrant is dead. Now who cleans up the mess?
  2. Trapped and alone, a character has only their wits and something hidden in their pocket to escape.
  3. Training is over. Now the subordinate is calling the shots. But they're about to learn that being in charge isn't all all it's cracked up to be.

How the Prompt Challenge works:

  • New prompts will be posted on the 1st of the month.
  • Submit your piece on Verso.ink by 11:59 pm PDT on the 15th of each month.
  • We'll review them all and pick our favorites. (This early in the process, that may be all of them!)
  • Favorites will get special distinction in our newsletter and on social media at the end of the month.
  • All entries meeting Verso.ink's standards will be published with a special Prompt Challenger badge. (This can apply toward your required 6 entries per year.)

A few reminders:

  • The prompts aren't genre specific so you can be flexible and apply them to whichever genre(s) you feel most comfortable with.
  • Consider going for quality over volume. Rather than writing a whole story or chapter, focus on a single, well-crafted scene. Ultimately, we'll still only publish prompts that meet our minimum standard for quality.
  • Have fun with it! The purpose of our monthly Prompt Challenge is to spark new ideas and build community. You might not produce anything award-winning over the next two weeks, but you'll be amazed at what you can come up with when you stretch yourself. Even more inspiring is seeing how other writers tackle the same idea in unique ways!

How to submit:

Note: You must be already accepted as a Verso.ink author. If you're not, please consider applying.

  • Log into your account
  • Create a new entry
  • On the right sidebar, next to Entry Type, click Story and change it to Prompt. This will change the default fields to be specific to the Monthly Prompt Challenge.
  • Fill in Title, Description, and Body.
  • Click the Meta tab and select the Prompt that fits your submission.
  • Optional: Add a Genre, sub Genre, and Social Media image.
  • Click the Save Draft and submit for Review button. Entries won't be published immediately, but will be released all together at the end of the month.
