Privacy Policy for Verso Playground Chrome Extension

Last Updated: August 18, 2025

Introduction

Verso (“we”, our”, or us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your choices when you use the Verso Playground Chrome extension (“the Extension”).

Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information (when you sign up): Email, name, optional organization, country, language, plan and credits. This is used for authentication, billing/credits, and support.

2.2 Page/Article Content: When you run a task, the Extension temporarily accesses the content of the current page to generate results (e.g., headlines, newsletters, audio). Content extraction runs in your browser.

2.3 Google Drive files (optional): If you connect Google, we request the per‑file Drive scope (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file) and use the Google Picker to let you explicitly select files. The Extension can only access files you select (or files created by the Extension). Your Google access token is stored locally by Chrome and used only to access those selected files.

2.4 Generation Inputs & Outputs (beta): To improve quality during beta, we create a generation log per request. Logs can include: task, model used, temperature (if applicable), the page URL, input headline/lede, a truncated portion of input content (~first 1,000 characters) — including content from Google Drive files you select — the prompt used, your custom instructions/examples (if provided), the generated outputs, and your thumbs up/down feedback.

2.5 Settings & Preferences: Selected models, voice choices, custom instructions, examples, and language preference. These are stored using Chrome’s storage on your device and synchronized per your Chrome settings.

2.6 Usage & Error Data: Basic analytics and error details (timestamp, type, non-sensitive context like extension version and language) for reliability and support.

How We Use Your Information

3.1 Provide the service: Authenticate you, extract page or Google Docs content you select, run tasks, and display results.

3.2 Improve the service (beta): Analyze generation logs and feedback to debug, evaluate models, and improve prompts and features.

3.3 Support and safety: Diagnose issues, enforce fair use/credits, and protect against abuse.

Data Storage and Security

4.1 Local (on your device): Settings/preferences and (if you connect Google) your Google access token are stored via Chrome storage. Audio generated by TTS/podcast is handled in your session.

4.2 Our backend: Account data, usage logs, and generation logs are stored in Google Cloud (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore, US). Access is restricted to authorized staff and systems.

4.3 Transmission: All network communication (including calls to our Cloud Functions) uses HTTPS.

Third-Party Services

We may send content you select — including Google user data (e.g., content from Google Drive files you choose to share with the Extension) — to third‑party AI providers to generate results, via our backend:

  • OpenAI (text and TTS)
  • Anthropic Claude (text)
  • Google Gemini (text)
  • ElevenLabs (TTS)

We use Google services for hosting and identity (Google Cloud / Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore). We disclose Google user data only as necessary to provide the Extension’s features (e.g., processing selected file content to generate outputs), to support reliability and abuse prevention, and as required by law. We do not sell your Google user data.

Google Integrations (Docs/Drive)

7.1 Scopes: The Extension requests the per‑file Drive scope (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file). This limits access to files you explicitly select via the Google Picker or files created by the Extension. The Extension does not request broad access to all of your Drive files.

7.2 Tokens: Your Google access token is stored locally by Chrome and not stored on our servers. It’s used only to access content you select.

7.3 Disconnect: You can disconnect Google in the Extension at any time; this clears the cached token.

Your Choices & Rights

8.1 Access/Deletion: You can request access to or deletion of your account data and generation logs.

8.2 Google Access: You can choose not to connect Google or disconnect at any time.

Data Retention

We retain your data while your account is active and as needed to provide and improve the service. During beta, we retain generation logs to evaluate model quality and product performance. You can request deletion at any time.

What We Do Not Collect

  • We do not ask you to provide your own API keys for model providers in the Extension.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not use Google user data to train proprietary machine learning models. Third‑party AI providers process your inputs to generate outputs and may retain data as described in their respective privacy policies.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post updates here and adjust the Last Updated” date above.
